One small
example of this in our neighborhood is the
urban farm one
of my friends and mentors started to provide jobs to «returning citizens»: It required the city to help give away land and clear vacant property and some startup capital from a local
farming company, but it is based on the church's understanding
of the needs
of the people and explicitly tied to the concept that faithful believers can help disciple and encourage people who have been incarcerated for harming others, walking them through the transformative process.
It's also worth pointing out a deeper selfishness involved involved in the equation: Democratic states functionally subsidize Republican states, and as I found in my distant days in the Texas Legislature, (relatively) pro-tax
urban areas typically subsidize low - tax rural counties (think
of Michelle Bachmann's family
farm subsidy payments as an
example).
But, as the
example of King
Farm shows, new urbanism can devolve into the kind
of central planning criticized by the very founders
of the
urban planning school
of thought — and can also result in what is essentially a style without substance.
The videos for students illustrate the real life context for the experiments that they are working on, for
example a visit to the Thorntons factory in Derby links to the experiment investigating the melting point
of chocolate and a look inside an
urban hydroponics
farm that grows lettuces reveals that plants don't always need to grow in soil.
For
example, situation analysis and design / implementation / monitoring
of small projects with groups
of urban poor / women was supported in 20 cities as part
of the Cities
Farming for the Future Programme.
The more notable
examples include long - rotational forest management, fish
farming and tourism, as well as the potential for replicating the experience
of Manaus to create
urban economies based on technology and services.
