Krasinski and Blunt provide
excellent performances, as do the young
actors who play their kids, but the creatures are often the stars here.
We are instead given a number of impressive, but token flashy performances by veteran
actors in tough guy bit parts (Pete Postlethwaite and Chris Cooper as irredeemable lifelong criminals) and newcomers in «dramatic stretches» (The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner
who is good (again) but not as great as the star - makers would have you believe, and most notably, Blake Lively,
excellent as a drug - addled neighborhood floozy).
The movie features that
excellent Japanese
actor Hiroyuki Sanada,
who gave a performance to treasure in Yoji Yamada's The Twilight Samurai (2002)-- but is wasted here in a minor, bad guy role.
Rockwell,
who won Best Supporting
Actor for his performance as a dim cop on a short and normally racist fuse, is funny but couldn't be accused of underplaying, while the somewhat overlooked Harrelson, as the police chief
who unexpectedly turns out to be hiding not just a conscience but a tragic secret too, is quietly
excellent.
The film boasts an amazing cast — Casey Affleck
who can do no wrong playing a psychotic creep; Rooney Mara
who has proved herself a solid versatile
actor and desperately needs to shrug off the lingering Goth image festering from the wretched Dragon Tattoo film; and a slew of
excellent character
actors who I adore, Ben Foster and Keith Carradine among them.
Meanwhile there's a host of
excellent, underutilised
actors who only feature fleetingly, though their characters are so integral to Margaret's political history.
With magnificent turns by Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons (the latter especially,
who should be considered for Best Supporting
Actor once we fast - forward seven months from now), and a well maintained adrenaline rush by focused directing and
excellent editing, the only reason Whiplash isn't in the Top 10 is because of it's noticeably poor depiction of women and predictable emotional beats.
There is no casting for Dickens at this point — Fiennes was possibly going to play the role himself, but now will evidently find another
actor — but this could be a great role for Jones, and an
excellent project overall depending upon
who gets the nod to play Dickens.
Chadha has also assembled an
excellent supporting cast, from legendary British thespians in Sir Michael Gambon and Simon Callow,
who play General Hastings Ismay (Pug) and Cyril Radcliffe respectfully, and Indian film and theatre
actor Neeraj Kabi,
who provides an utterly convincing portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi.
The
actor is one of those guys
who you recognize when he comes on screen even if you can't name him, but really shines in a rare leading part here, with our review calling him «particularly
excellent, affecting and funny.»
Carell,
who began to shed his «gross - out - comedy -
actor» tag in 2014's «Foxcatcher», continues to demonstrate his skill as one of the most exciting dramatic
actors working today while Gosling is on fine, flashy & quick - fire form in his best role since «Crazy Stupid Love» and a superb supporting cast includes an always
excellent Rafe Spall and «New Girl's Max Greenfield
who delivers a brilliant turn as a nauseatingly hilarious mortgage broker.
John Goodman, Zoe Caldwell, Max von Sydow, Viola Davis and Jeffery Wright are all
excellent supports plus a cast of unknown
actors who all contribute in a small way that has a large impact on the overall story.
It's also just picked up a few official plaudits at the Genart (ist) Emerging
Actor Awards, which celebrates upcoming talent on all sides, where Madeleine Martin (who you might recognise as Becca from the excellent Californication) grabbed the emerging actress award and Devon Graye for best emerging a

Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone are both
excellent in their roles, especially the latter,
who delivers his finest work in years with a subtler, more emotional performance than we're used to seeing from the
actor.
(Don't worry, I know you have no time, just thought I'd mention it) He also wrote The Thicket with the lead character being a dwarf and they are soon to make a film of it with a European director and the
actor from Game of Thrones (
who happens to be a dwarf and is an
excellent actor).
And as with other aspects of the filmmaking that go a long way to compensate for the story's inadequacies, the performances are uniformly
excellent, with every
actor, even those in smaller roles like Daniel Kaluuya, getting tiny, lived - in moments that illuminate
who they are and make them more than just «the partner» or «the driver.»
Both Kheda Gazieva as Aminat, Ramasan's still beautiful but exhausted - looking mother and Aslan Elbiev as the ambivalent, mysterious Isa,
who was wounded in the conflict (the
actor really is missing some fingers which gives the character's dexterity as a handyman an added prurient fascination) are
excellent, and the supporting cast of local neighbors, Austrian police officers, social workers and schoolchildren are perfectly cast too.
You can practically diagram every scene in the film: The ones that slip in the backstories of the characters (Affleck's wife is eight months pregnant; Sibide's work visa is about to expire), the ones that reveal important information in - between the laughs (Tea Leoni's
excellent moment as an FBI agent
who's had too much to drink), the ones intended to inject some emotion into the picture (an attempted suicide) and the ones where the
actors were allowed to riff and improvise (practically any scene in which Murphy appears).
The Dark Horse is an
excellent mystery / romance about Hollywood
actor, Sean Fairchild and LAPD Detective Dan Moran,
who is also a bodyguard to the Hollywood elite.
What «consent is and is not» is explored in this
excellent program, which consists of unrehearsed, improvised, well - acted scenarios introduced by a host
who explains the young
actors» verbal and physical cues and offers information and advice.
She is an outstanding voice
actor who really brings Jaden to life in an
excellent way.
