House of Sand and Fog is a ponderous, slow moving
film which, if you allow yourself to take the time and let yourself fall into the
excellent characterizations by Connelly and Kingsley, becomes a ponderous
film with a killer ending that, even if you see it
coming a mile away, is still a killer ending worth sitting for.

film, Insurgent
came with an

coming weeks; and the forthcoming punk - rock thriller Green Room, which begins its theatrical release next week.
Bolstered by Emma Stone's gracefully layered performance, the
film's emotional connection
comes from King's dueling inner conflicts: the responsibility of carrying the women's game forward and her growing attraction to the tour hairdresser (an
excellent Andrea Riseborough).
Apparently screened theatrically in Dolby Digital, the
film has been downmixed to Dolby Surround for DVD but sounds
excellent all the same — the Hebrew dialogue (supplemented by optional yellow English subtitles)
comes through clearly and the diegetic song selections are of strong fidelity.
If the
film's riff on «The Champ» works at all, it's because of the lived - in relationship between Gyllenhaal and Laurence, and it suggests big things to
come: she was also
excellent in SXSW drama «Lamb» and as the young Pensatucky in «Orange Is The New Black» this year, and is playing a lead role in David Lowery's upcoming «Pete's Dragon.»
The visual spectacle certainly compensates for the few misgivings, but with a few tweaks in the storytelling, we
came so close to a trifecta of
excellent Star Trek
films.
As for the
film's plot: the con man hijinks don't do anything new, and some of the
film's twists aren't too hard to see
coming, but the pace is quick and there are a few
excellent scenes.
The video transfer is in crisp 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen while audio is provided in an
excellent and immersive Dolby 5.1 English dub (and here my qualification of a «general» lack of a western bias
comes into play) that is, nonetheless, inferior to the Japanese - language 2.0 surround track, which features the original vocal talent who have, not including this
film, logged over twenty - six hours of finished time voicing these characters.
Naturally, there were some areas where you could see things
coming, but there is some
excellent misdirection that occurs throughout the
film.
Connery and Pfeiffer are both
excellent, but much of the
film's pleasure
comes from watching the consummate pros filling out the roles of various bureaucrats, among them James Fox (as a perceptive MI6 head), Roy Scheider (as a wily CIA chief) and director Ken Russell (as an excitable British official — and amusingly looking like Bernie Sanders with bedhead).
Even though it features some
excellent performances and a great story, Being Flynn isn't without its faults most notably the pacing which leaves the
film dragging through the second act when Jonathan
comes into the shelter for the first time.
The best playing in flashback
comes from the
excellent Howle, who gives Tony a dreamy timidity that lifts the
film immensely — not least because of the distance we have to travel to get to the crabby, disappointed figure cut by Broadbent.
A lot of the
film's success ultimately
comes down to the
excellent action sequences, and that's where having a guy like Bradley — who worked as a stunt coordinator and second unit director on several big movies — pays off.

I personally would have preferred the best actress award to go to Saoirse Ronan for that

My absolute favorite moment in the
film came as Charlie is being chased through Bucharest to Moby's
