This Fall, the gallery will present its first solo
exhibition of her work, (October 31st — December 5th) with a meticulously chosen group
of major
figurative sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s, contextualized with drawings and works from the «Souvenir» series.
After leaving the field
of clinical psychology in the mid-1940s, Truitt began making
figurative sculptures, but turned toward reduced geometric forms after visiting the Guggenheim Museum with her friend Mary Pinchot Meyer to see H.H. Arnason's
exhibition «American Abstract Expressionists and Imagists» in November 1961.
The
exhibition, which opens at Tate Modern in November and will run till spring 2016, will include a wide selection
of Calder's motorised constructions and
figurative wire portraits, often inspired by the circus or cabaret, alongside his suspended kinetic
sculptures of vividly coloured shapes.

Taking its cue from the resurgence
of figurative sculpture in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and from Sigmund Freud's essay «The Uncanny» (1919), the
exhibition brings together mannequin - related art works, mostly from the 1960s onwards, with objects from disparate cultural contexts that engender a similar sense

The grand special
exhibition on occasion
of the inauguration
of the enlarged Kunstmuseum Basel will map the medium's extraordinarily dynamic evolution: the classical idea and form
of sculpture grows more flexible and abstract as some artists integrate the trivial stuff
of everyday life into their art or blur its spatial and conceptual boundaries, even as others return to the
figurative tradition in an effort to set the genre on a new solid foundation.
Counts further conveys the symbolic depth
of objects with her two most
figurative sculptures in the
exhibition, Moment A, a massive candle dripping with satisfying layers
of blue, white, gray, and silver glazes, and Moment B, a colorful vase full
of large ceramic roses.
During this
exhibition, Doryphoros and Dyson took the place
of traditional bronze and marble
figurative sculpture on either side
of the grand stone staircase, set against the backdrop
of casts from the Parthenon frieze given by George IV to decorate Manchester's very own temple to culture.
The
exhibition also shows a selection
of Lüpertz's earlier
figurative bronze
sculptures from 2001 to 2015 scattered throughout the galleries, though they are not representative
of the artist's finest work and, with their blocky forms and sloppy neon coloring, look rather comical next to all these works from antiquity and the Middle Ages — all the better for the drawings, the real centerpiece.
At a first gaze, the idea
of reinterpretation
of earlier movements within the genre
of figurative sculpture seems to be the main thread
of the
exhibition; the «Human Statues» by Frank Benson re-visit the classic models
of sculpture with a post-modern attitude, suggestions
of an archaic past revive in Schütte's warriors, while a Minimalistic taste gives shape to Georg Herold's haggard creatures.
