Riley's early curve paintings from the 1960s, which open the
exhibition, shook traditional conceptions of art almost literally: their disorientating contour lines are too much
for the eyes and brain to
process, so that they genuinely seem to vibrate and undulate on the wall.
Examples of this experimental approach in the
exhibition include Fuller's soft - ground etching, made by impressing lace and a string garlic bag into the plate's surface coating; Ryan's use of a recycled floorboard
for her woodblock print; Bourgeois» sculptural treatment of the engraving
process; and Nevelson's use of fabric dipped in acid to create etching directly on the plate.
The concept behind the
exhibition comes from Yass» desire to reveal work in
process and to consider that the experience of viewing preparations and sketches
for art works holds complexities and interest in its own right.
