«The art market is such a financial force,» says Cooper, «that the decisions about who is awarded
exhibitions is probably influenced
by the idea that
women aren't as bankable as the
men — precisely because they're not as well known
and they don't have as many major shows.
Inequality in almost every area of the art world was obvious: male artists dominated both historic collections
and also
exhibitions of contemporary art;
women were excluded or absent from major art history books; almost all the staff in art institutions
and universities were
men;
and work
by female artists had less commercial value.

The Rose's
exhibition included large - scale canvases like Love
and Violence (1965)-- in which a
man grabs a
woman by the throat, while frames from a horror film unfold below against a blood - red background — as well as photo
and video documentation from the 1960s through the 1980s of Drexler's theater pieces, which premiered at such avant - garde New York venues as the Judson Poets» Theater
and Theater for the New City.
This year's Summer
Exhibition, which is co-ordinated
by sculptor Richard Wilson RA, celebrates this phenomenon with works
by more than 15 two - people partnerships:
men,
women,
man and woman,
women who have been
men, twins, siblings, friends, lovers, ex-lovers, spouses.
This
exhibition will include four works: a Giacometti painted bronze sculpture, Standing
Woman, 1948; a large Mark di Suvero sculpture in metal
and wood, entitled The A Train, 1966; a large - scale color photograph
by Jeff Wall, A ventriloquist at a birthday party in October 1947, 1990;
and a suite of seven carved wood sculptures
by the American folk artist Edgar Tolson, entitled The Fall of
Man.
The
exhibition African Headwear: Beyond Fashion presents a selection of headwear that was once —
and in some instances still is — worn
by kings
and chiefs, religious practitioners, warriors,
and men,
women,
and infants in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
Examples from the
exhibition include: William Moore McCulloch, who worked tirelessly for equal rights at the risk of political suicide
and was recognized
by President Kennedy for his important influence in passing the Civil Rights Act; Edward Brooke, one of the first Republicans to call on President Nixon to resign in light of the Watergate scandal; Mose Wright, who in 1955 testified at the trial of the
men who brutally abducted, tortured,
and murdered his great nephew, Emmett Till, for allegedly whistling at a white
woman;
and Lois Jenson, a Minnesota miner who, in 1988, filed Lois E. Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Co.
and won the first class - action sexual harassment lawsuit in the United States.
Anchored
by the 1986 Bruce Nauman video «Violent Incident (
Man -
Woman Segment)», Spooner's Violent Incident
exhibition, co-curated with Gortzak is the longest - running component of Spooner's solo show
and includes none of her own work.
This
exhibition loosely inspired
by Jean - Luc Godard's 1966 masterpiece Masculin Féminin, aims to explore the challenge of representing the mysterious, at times ineffable
and immaterial, dynamics that occur or do not occur between a
woman and a
man.
Jeffrey Stockbridge's first solo
exhibition at the gallery coincides with the publication of his book
by the same name,
and features several large format color photographs (shot with a 4 × 5 film camera) of
men and women caught in the grip of drug addiction
and prostitution along Kensington Avenue in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
