Underlying the presence of physical barriers
in churches and seminaries is a
set of still - perpetuated attitudinal barriers — primarily the following: (1) low expectations on the part of both pastors and laypeople of just what a disabled person can do; (2) a psychologically defined negation, usually unconscious, reflecting the Jamesian response of «fight or fly»; (3) simple lack of
experience with handicapped persons, and consequent embarrassment; (4) biblically derived sanctions, expressing thousands of years of tradition.
Instead of teaching their own positive convictions, which can help overcome a dehumanizing orthodoxy and so transform the life of the
church, these schools seem to think that they will transform society and
church by offering this or that course
in urban studies, by relocating the
setting of education to the places «where people live,» and by increased field
experiences.
Moreover, it rings true to the entrepreneurial
experience of many fundamentalist ministers, whose independent
churches succeed by dint of their own labor, God's grace and the direct contributions of those
in the pews or
in front of the television
set, unsupported by national denominations analogous to big government.
In my own
experience,
setting down
church as something to «go to» and instead to «Be,» has changed everything.
When 2 or more gather
in His name, there is He and there is
church, no
set time or place is ever necessary; yet, we must come together to
experience Christ.
The link between a faith
experience gained
in front of a television
set and subsequent involvement within a local
church or Christian group is usually provided by the bridge of personal relationship.

in their worship, prayer, study and lives) I agree â $ «I can not remember deep and meaningful worship (at another local
church setting that is) quite like I have
experienced at Rothesay.
From about 1520, as the Northern Renaissance felt the impact of Luther's revolt against the corrupt practices of the Roman
Church, a new
set of aesthetics took hold,
