In view
of the growing body
of work evaluating breastfeeding peer support, we have distinguished between this and other
kinds of lay support, following the definition by Dennis 2002: «Peer support is provided by lay individuals who are not part
of the client's own embedded network, who possess
experiential knowledge of the targeted behaviour (i.e. successful breastfeeding skills) and similar qualities (i.e. age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, residency etc.) in order to aid the client during a time
of actual or potential stress (i.e. the initiation and continuation
of breastfeeding).»
