So the report notes that the current «pause» in new global average temperature records since 1998 — a year that saw the second strongest El Nino on record and shattered warming records — does not reflect the long - term trend and may be
explained by the oceans absorbing the majority of the extra heat trapped
by greenhouse gases as well as the cooling contributions of
volcanic eruptions.
But who's to say that if we had enough data and understanding, these spikes and dips could not be thoroughly
explained by solar influences,
volcanic eruptions, greenhouse gas changes, ice sheet dynamics, etc..?
But even then, a rational person would more likely come to the conclusion that there is a warming trend superimposed onto interannual variability (mainly
explained by ENSO and
volcanic eruptions).
Other factors capable of changing the climate, like
volcanic eruptions and changes in the sun's intensity, can not
by themselves
explain the changes we've observed in the Earth's climate.
Curiously, in their FAQ section «Has global warming stopped» http://berkeleyearth.org/faq/#stopped they try to
explain the current lack of warming
by pointing out that there was similarly no warming from 1980 — 1995, without mentioning the two major
volcanic eruptions that occurred during that period.
I noted that the climate models reviewed
by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) showed that temperature trends in the last century could not be
explained on the basis of natural forces (such as
volcanic eruptions) alone.
