From the elusive plumes of Europa to Enceladus» dramatic cryovolcanic geysers and
the extreme volcanism of Io, the Solar System hosts a wide spectrum of active geological processes.
Becker notes the crater coincides in age with the breakup of Gondwanaland, the opening of the Indian Ocean, and
extreme volcanism across the Siberian plains — plus, of course, the massive extinction.

In fact, it is possible to have some frost rings without any evidence of explosive
volcanism, presumably occurring due to
extremes in local weather, but, as shown above, they do seem to record large volcanic eruptions in recent times very well indeed.
Detailed impacts, however, will vary strongly from region to region and coast to coast and therefore can not be easily generalized, as changing mean and
extreme coastal water levels depend on a combination of near shore and offshore processes, related to climatic but also non-climatic anthropogenic factors, such as natural land movement arising from tectonics,
volcanism or compaction; land subsidence due to anthropogenic extraction of underground resources; and changes in coastal morphology resulting from sediment transport induced by natural and / or anthropogenic factors.
Massive extinctions occur more often under cool environmental conditions or when clades are submitted to
extreme stress by natural catastrophes; for example, intense
volcanism, glaciations, epidemics, etc..
Factors # 1, # 2, and # 3 are easy to calculate with maths, while computer modeling and the geological record make it possible to work out # 4, so scientists have a fairly confident grasp on the rhythms that dictate ice ages — absent
extreme periods of
volcanism or other sources of unusually high quantities of greenhouse gasses.
