(Note that the general
eye exam form used by ACVO's does not go to CERF, so many diagnoses are not registered.
In order to avoid any misjudgment of the dog's condition the standardized
eye exam form needs to be fully completed by the veterinary ophthalmologist.
We continued work on our own, gathering pedigrees and
eye exam forms on affected dogs.

Before the
exam, the dog's owner is given a
form at our hospital to complete with information on: 1) the owner (name, address) 2) the dog (name, breed, birth date, AKC registration number, tattoo or microchip identification number) After the examination, the veterinary ophthalmologist will complete the
form and indicate any
eye abnormalities.

In an effort to further our understanding of PRA in the Italian Greyhound, OptiGen encourages owners who submit samples for IG - PRA1 testing to include any
eye exam information with their order
forms.
Eye exams: While annual
eye exams by veterinary ophthalmologists are recommended for all breeds, this is especially important for Toy and Miniature Poodles since there is more than one
form of PRA known to affect the breed.
As an individual breeder, if you are considering importing a dog you should only do so if it has had its hips and elbows cleared, has had a clear
eye exam within the past year, a thyroid panel, Pelger - Huet Anomaly screen, and has been DNA tested for MDR1, cataracts, CEA, the PRCD
form of PRA, degenerative myelopathy, and cobalamin malabsorbtion.
Failure to do annual
eye exams through at least 10 years of age, or assuming that any retinal defect found can't be inherited because the dog or its parents have cleared the prcd test has the potential to result in increased frequency of those other and presently rare
forms of retinal disease because breeders are makng mating choices based on false assumptions.
Along with the completed
form, we need a copy of the dog's pedigree (5 - 6 generations), any current / previous
eye exam records, and 3 - 5 ml of whole unclotted blood in EDTA to be sent to OptiGen 767 Warren Rd. Ithaca NY 14850.
Since the test for prcd - PRA can only reveal the existence of affected or carrier status of this one
form of PRA, breeders and owners of the breed should still have regular
eye exams by veterinary ophthalmologists.
When we and other board - certified veterinary ophthalmologists do screening
eye exams called Canine Animal
Eye Registry (CAER)
exams to help dog breeders make more informed breeding decisions, we submit the
forms to OFA who analyzes the data to provide «information on trends in
eye disease and breed susceptibility.»
At this point, one
form can not be distinguished from another based on an
eye exam.
Modeled after the OFA's
eye screening program, the new ACA (for «Advanced CArdiac»)
exam form is a triplicate
form, and the research copy will allow aggregate capture of data (with dog and owner identity removed) that will be provided to breed clubs and the research community.
