These areas include the nose, flews, mucous membranes,
eyelid margins, etc..
Distichia are small hairs growing from
the eyelid margins.
Rockstar was also found to have bladder stones and an ocular condition called entropion where
the eyelid margins roll inward causing irritation to his corneas.
Distichiae usually emerge along the margin of the eyelid through the duct or opening of the meibomian gland, although they may arise at other locations along

the eyelid margin, or within the tear duct may cause corneal ulceration.
Distichiasis is the term for fine hairs that grows at
the eyelid margin which occur mostly in cocker spaniels.
The most common eyelid neoplasm of dogs is a Meibomian adenoma.4 This neoplasm arises from the Meibomian gland but is observed at
the eyelid margin, near the Meibomian orifice (Figure 5).
Entropion is an abnormal inward rolling of
the eyelid margin so that eyelid skin is rubbing against the surface of the eye.
An irritant such as misplaced hairs on the lower
eyelid margin, or a rolling inward of the
eyelid margin (entropion), or a foreign body such as plant material, or an ulcer on the cornea of the eye are all examples of what can cause the overproduction of tears.

It differs from entropian in that it is a condition in which extra eyelashes (termed distichiae) grow out from the inner
margin of the
eyelid whereas entropion results from an inward roll of the
eyelid that causes eye irritation from normal eyelashes.
Canine distichiasis is characterized by an additional row of lashes in which the adventitious cilia (distichiae) emerge on the free
margin of the
eyelids through the meibomian gland orifices [10, 19].
If you suspect that your cat is paler than usual, you can gently move the
eyelid away from the normal position to expose the conjunctivae, or the mucous membranes surrounding the eye under the lid
margins.
This causes the eyelashes and / or the haired
margin of the
eyelids to rub on the cornea resulting in irritation.
Radiation therapy is sometimes used if surgery is unable to remove the tumor in its entirety from external surfaces (skin /
eyelids, «incomplete
margins»).
The meibomian glands produce oily secretions that help lubricate the eyes, and the meibomian gland ducts drain out along the
margins of the
eyelids.
Entropion can be assessed by applying gentle pressure to the
eyelid and observing that there is an outward rolling of the hairs along the
margin before you get to the conjunctiva.
