And the
fact that the script didn't meet the typically
none - too - discriminating standards
of actors like Tara Reid and Chris Klein should be your first clue as to how bad it is.
And
none of which is helped by the
fact that the voice
actors sound as bored reading their lines as you do listening to them.
Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell were both nominated, at last, for their roles in «The Americans,» but the
fact they didn't win says a lot about that show feeling like «the old guard» in comparison with series like «Baskets,» for which Louie Anderson won best supporting
actor, «Mr. Robot» and «Master
of None,» for which Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang won the best comedy writing award.
While
none of Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, F. Murray Abraham, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum or any
of the other names in the film has the drawing power that Roberts did in 2000, the
fact that so many recognizable
actors were assembled for the same film made them a type
of collective draw — a
fact which the film's marketers seized upon with highly colorful promotional posters highlighting the above names and many more.
It is easy to assume that a hit like this would have been a launching pad for its twentysomething
actors and actresses, but in
fact almost
none of them went on to meaningful film careers.
In
fact,
none of the
actors appear in more than perhaps 20 %
of the movie, so even fans
of any
of the other thespians in this fine ensemble will be restless if they are solely tuning in to see their favorite
actors perform.
Leaving aside the
fact that
none of these folks look like they belong in the same gene pool (and The Wire has a funny article about how only one
of the
actors in the film is actually Jewish), the premise has promise, since forcing the members
of a dysfunctional family (and there is much «dys» here) to spend time in a small space could lead to some funny results.
A lot
of that has to do with the
fact that
none of the characters or
actors are much fun to watch other than Fiona Dourif, who does do a pretty nice job.
