do this, Poston believes it is important to understand who the STEM
faculty is (tenure - track, adjunct, and part - or full - time non-tenured track instructors), how they are supported, and who is
doing what
in the
classroom.
Whether directly (purely online) or
in a hybrid fashion (a residential course that uses a learning - management system to
do basic administrative work or more sophisticated tasks such as assessments or discussion boards),
faculty and learners are working
in a new kind of
classroom.
These separate measures of teaching excellence allow us to address empirically whether those
faculty who
do particularly well
in the
classroom pay a price
in terms of their scholarship.
Although many postsecondary
faculty members remarked on the effectiveness of the professional development provided
in these studies, it was also noted that the traditional university reward system
does not generally recognize innovation
in classroom instruction (Wedman & Diggs, 2001).
Intellectual philanthropy spoke to the generous sharing of idea, as
faculty willingly contributed what they were
doing in the
classroom for the elucidation of others.
While there will always be opportunities for pure legal theorists, especially at the most elite and established law
faculties, there is an increasing willingness among the academic community to not only train their students on the use of technology
in the
classroom, but also participate directly
in the development of this technology, often
in an interdisciplinary relationship with other
faculties (for example, the work we're
doing with Duke Law).
