In addition to better supporting
faculty of color, Columbia's initiative also seeks to expand the university's pool
of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, or LGBTQ,
faculty members.58
In 2015, Yale University created a new position — deputy provost for
faculty development and diversity — dedicated solely to diversifying the
faculty.59
In 2014, Brown University's president announced a goal to double the percentage
of the university's
faculty of color by 2024.60 By promoting programs that provide
faculty of color with mentoring supports, these universities seek to create and sustain diverse
faculty cohorts.
University
faculty have much more leeway as to their text selection, but people
of color are severely underrepresented
in the full - time teaching ranks.
Through this significant effort, UCEA has facilitated the development
of a robust pipeline
of faculty and graduate students
of color in the field
of educational leadership.
In fall 2014, 46 percent
of LMU's School
of Education full - time
faculty members and 40 percent
of part - time
faculty members were people
of color.138 Additionally, students at LMU benefit from a variety
of community partnerships between LMU and diverse local organizations and schools.
In colleges
of education, where most
of these school and school system leaders are being educated, the percent
of faculty members
of color is 15.5 %.
As such, some
faculty may harbor unconscious perceptions
of men
of color that influence their interactions with them
in class and on campus.
