In Portrait of My Father, a piece from Memory Works also included in the current exhibition, a photograph of the artist's father fades in and out of clarity based on an EKG reading of Jim's own heartbeat while he slept.

Stripped of any details, his solid color block - based renderings have the appearance of cut - outs or collages, referring to the fading of memory.

A shallow space, in which a combination of clearly defined graphical lines and stencils sit on the surface, contrasts with a more ambiguous environment made up of naturalistic gestures that fade in and out of focus like a distant memory.

By appropriating different compositional angles, fleet brush strokes of wet paint on wet paint, and out - of - focus framing, Tuymans creates blurry and almost delusional images of faded memories.

Then I'll be glad I stuck it out, once the memories of cabbage leaves and bits of dried potato found in unexpected places have faded.

Without shelling out the price of a late model Lexus to completely rebuild it, my dream of charred marshmallows and newspaper rolls and Pete Townsend matches and roaring fires seemed to be just that: an unrealizable vision, as abstract and distant as the fading memories of my own childhood.
