Though astronomers still do not know what kinds of events or objects produce FRBs, the discovery is a stepping stone for astronomers to understand the diffuse,
faint web of material that exists between
galaxies,
called the cosmic web.
In this discovery, reported by Caltech researchers in June, radio telescopes picked up
faint traces of the organic compound propylene oxide in a vast cloud of gas and dust
called Sagittarius B2, which is near the center of our
galaxy.
Further studies showed that this object,
called B3 1715 +425, is a supermassive black hole surrounded by a
galaxy much smaller and
fainter than would be expected.
By combining these color data, it is possible to make a crude estimate of the distances to the
faint background
galaxies (
called photometric redshift).
Knowing the abundance of oxygen in the
galaxy called COSMOS - 1908 is an important stepping stone toward allowing astronomers to better understand the population of
faint, distant
galaxies observed when the Universe was only a few billion years old, Shapley said.
