Segue 2, discovered in 2009 as part of the massive Sloan Digital Sky Survey, is one of
the faintest known galaxies, with light output just 900 times that of the sun.

Despite being the largest
known spiral
galaxy, Malin 1 is so dim and its arms so
faint that it remained undetected until the 1980s.
Though astronomers still do not
know what kinds of events or objects produce FRBs, the discovery is a stepping stone for astronomers to understand the diffuse,
faint web of material that exists between
galaxies, called the cosmic web.
«You build bigger, you go
fainter, you go deeper, and you'll have a shot at a major discovery,» explains Pudritz, «So building these larger machines will
no doubt allow us to study the birth of the first
galaxies and even planet formation around distant stars.
All of these worlds orbit
faint ruddy stars
known as M dwarfs, the most common type of star in the
galaxy.
The telescope has helped researchers detect such clusters by exploiting a phenomenon
known as the Sunyaev - Zel «dovich effect, which causes massive
galaxy clusters to leave an impression on the cosmic microwave background: a
faint, universe - spanning glow of light left over from the big bang.
Observations by the NASA / ESA Hubble Space Telescope have taken advantage of gravitational lensing to reveal the largest sample of the
faintest and earliest
known galaxies in the Universe.
It was once possible to confuse
faint dwarf
galaxies like Segue 2 with globular clusters — tightly bound clumps of stars that are also
known to orbit larger
galaxies like the Milky Way.
Zemcov et al. sent up a rocket to measure the fluctuations in this
faint background and found largescale fluctuations greater than
known galaxies alone should produce (see the Perspective by Moseley).
Researchers were able to confirm characteristics of the Little Cub
galaxy using Keck Observatory's Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph, a
faint - light instrument capable of taking spectra and images of the most distant
known objects in the universe.
This
galaxy is one of the brightest
galaxies in the sky, and although it is too
faint to see with the naked eye, it is an easy
galaxy to find with binoculars if you
know where to look.
The Andromeda Galaxy, also
known as M31, is one of only a few
galaxies that are visible from Earth with the unaided eye, and is seen as a
faint smudge in the constellation Andromeda.
Other close companions are the well - studied Carina, Draco, Fornax, Leo I, Leo II, Sextans, Sculptor, and Ursa Minor
galaxies, as well as several very
faint, less well -
known objects.

known group of the
faintest and youngest primordial
galaxies ever — over 250 — some of which are estimated -LSB-...]
Knowing the abundance of oxygen in the
galaxy called COSMOS - 1908 is an important stepping stone toward allowing astronomers to better understand the population of
faint, distant
galaxies observed when the Universe was only a few billion years old, Shapley said.
Scientists have decoded
faint distortions in the patterns of the universe's earliest light to map huge tubelike structures invisible to our eyes -
known as filaments - that serve as superhighways for delivering matter to dense hubs such as
galaxy clusters.
