and white, amoral yet supposedly lovable characters played deadpan by the usual suspects (Kieran Culkin, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Kevin Corrigan), reciting apparently nihilistic but essentially soft - center dialogue, jangly indie
music at the end,
and a pretty good, if belated, Dick Cheney joke;
and Petter Lennstrand's loveably lo - fi Up in the Sky, shown in the Youth Screen section, about a young girl abandoned by overworked parents at a sinister recycling plant, who is reluctantly adopted by a reconstituted
family of misfits
and marginalized (mostly puppets) who are secretly building a rocket — it's for anyone who has ever loved the Tintin moon adventures, books with resourceful heroines, narratives with oddball gangs,
and the legendary episode of Angel where David Boreanaz turned into a Muppet.
He used his speech (which was not stunted by that pesky Oscar
music) to thank his
family and co-stars,
and lastly, to call attention to the ecological concerns he has, as experienced by his time
filming «The Revenant.»
The
film has the odd interesting loose - end, uses
music unpredictably
and it is properly grotesque in places, such as the first scene in which we see the Brufort
family chewing on the various limbs
and body parts of their victims.
Considering the backdrop of Brooklyn's
music scene (
music for the
film was written by former Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis
and Johnathan Rice, who are known together as the duo Jenny
and Johnny) we can expect to hear Hathaway sing again, as she did in her Oscar - winning turn in 2012's «Les Misérables» —
and considering that she «faces the reality of her life,» we can probably expect that self - expression through
music reunites her with her estranged
family and enables her to move past her arrested development.
At the
film's recent press day in Los Angeles, the 31 - year - old Brit revealed why he's excited to explore new parts, what attracted him to play a bad guy that's a victim, his love of noirish 70's thrillers like «Klute,» «Dirty Harry,»
