Qantas this week announced
changes to its domestic
fare structures, that will result
in some earning
changes to the affected
economy classes.
One big
change happened a couple years ago when Alaska did limit the companion
fare to itineraries booked
in economy class.
Among the
changes: The number of Avios earned (that's Executive Club's «currency») will basically be increased for passengers
in business and first class — especially
in the higher
fare classes — and decreased for those flying on the lowest
economy fares.
While we all get equally crushed by the
changes to the earnings on most
economy fares, Alaska and BAEC flyers get substantial increases
in miles earned for premium cabin travel — so far there's no sign of a similar increase for AAdvantage members.
Because of this I thought I'd run a 3 - part series looking at the
changes that are coming and how they will affect those of us who mostly book discounted
Economy Class
fares and discounted Business Class
fares — if you book the more expensive
fares then you're
in luck and you'll be doing just fine.
With the introduction of so many different award classes, the miles needed for an award have
changed drastically: Some of the «Standard» awards have dropped by more than 20 % — that was to be expected as all the routes
in question have offered very cheap
economy fares over the last year, making a redemption on these routes generally unattractive.
NOTE: Some
fares have also
changed for premium
economy — and I mean real premium
economy, not just extra legroom
in coach.
This used to be a pretty lackluster perk since it was basically 2 - for - 1 companion deals on full -
fare premium tickets, but Amex improved it dramatically
in 2017 by
changing it into a discount on premium
economy, business - and first - class tickets.
