You never feel there is too much of one or the other, although the
travelling in the boat and the
fast travel system is a bit tedious and blatantly used to mask load times.
Other than the occasional hidden chest, there's very little to do
in the overworld and the re-released game would really have benefitted from some sort of
fast travel system.
Losing nearly an hour of progress because the
fast travel system decided to take me straight into a bandit camp and spawned me
in the middle of four goons who were immediately wailing on me while I was still loading
in with no chance of escape just isn't fun.
With that said, as much as I enjoyed the free running and traversal
systems, there were times when I wished I could just
fast travel like
in most open world games these days.
These materials can often be found near wormhole transportation
systems, Metal Gear Survive's form of
fast travel, and respawn after so many
in - game days, so it's good to make a habit of making the rounds around Dite to restock on essentials.
It's not an uncommon occurrence to be exploring a painting only to be stopped and asked to go to the outside world to synthesise an item that you don't even have the recipe for, obtain the recipe and get the ingredients to synthesise the item, then go all the way back to where you were
in the painting (remember, the
fast travel system only takes you to the start of an area), use the item, and then progress further into the location.
Later
in the game, it seems Lara will be able to use a
fast travel system to replay previous hubs using unlocked abilities to track down new side - quests.
A limited
fast -
travel system assuages this to a degree, though you'll need to manually reach a place first before it unlocks
in fast travel.
In terms of size Lego City is huge and as you proceed through the story you gradually unlock more sections, including a railway
system which can be used for
fast travel.
[Obviously, if they were any further away, or if the random supernovas blew up too early to become part of the solar
system's dust cloud, or were
traveling too
fast to be captured by what would become part of the solar
system's dust cloud, or were thrown out too slow to get here
in time, or were formed but were inside another star gravity field and never thrown back into space, even more dust would be lost
in space, but let's keep the problem easy.
Fast -
travel systems have been used
in games for decades, and there are many varieties.
Although a
fast travel system between sign posts can help shuttle you from objective to objective, it is often far more rewarding to simply ride the long way and take
in the sights, seeing the crowded alleys of Novigrad seamlessly give way to the murky swamps of Velen.
