It all has to do with the way our brains are wired:
Kids over-exposed to high -
fat, high - sugar foods have a less sensitive reward system and need more junk food to feel the good effects sweet
treats bring.
A generation ago, a burger and fries were often just an occasional
treat and few folks thought much about the calories and
fat they and their
kids were consuming.
I agree that small «goodie bags» of nuts, berries, seeds, grains in a trail mix and work really well and even young
kids reach for food when they're hungry and sugar /
fat / salt «
treats» when they want to «satisfy taste buds.»
Everyone loves their
treats, and I joke that I give my
kids just as many
treats as the next parent; only my rule is that a «
treat» is something that is nutrient - dense, full of good
fats, protein, and unrefined, whole - food sweeteners (primarily using real fruit, raw honey, and stevia).
