A kind
of Fatal Attraction for the teen generation, it never seems to be quite sure whether it's trying to be a teen movie or a stylish thriller and thus manages to stop just short of achieving either.
This book follows the earlier, more technical Life in Amber (Review, 12 December, 1992) and describes the progress of the Poinars» passionate pursuit of the bugs and their host material, the amber that for thousands of years has proved a lasting and sometimes
fatal attraction for humans.
Play Misty for Me wound up making five times more than it cost and is a precursor to such erotic thrillers
as Fatal Attraction (1987) and Basic Instinct (1992).
It is also great to see Liam Neeson back on screen, especially in this type of role for a change, as I would usually match this character to someone like Michael Douglas in the classic

Although
Fatal Attraction does go overboard in a few memorable scenes, it never quite breaks suspension of disbelief, even when Lyne lets it all rip in a frantic confrontation at the end (reportedly re-shot for audience approval) that commands your attention, even if it feels a bit inconsistent with the rest of the film's tone
The later
film Fatal Attraction, which took many liberties from this, is better done for this significant reason.
