The social consequences of three generations of Communist rule threaten to prove
fatal: By 2000 Russia's fertility had
fallen to only 1.25
per female, one of the world's lowest, and Russia's population began declining.
Despite population growth and a corresponding rise in the number of
fatal injuries, the rate of
fatal home injuries has declined dramatically over the past 100 years,
falling by 22 percent to 21.8 deaths
per 100,000 people in 2014 from 28 deaths
per 100,000 people in 1912.
