Young
fathers need more support to help them develop and maintain a positive presence in their children's lives, according to a new report by a coalition of family support organisations including the Fatherhood Institute.

Through this work these LAs identified a
need to offer individual agencies practical information and ideas to help them
support their own staff to become
more father - inclusive.
The key is for services to think about
fathers support needs and how they might work
more effectively with this client group — and help is at hand.
Unmarried urban
fathers are actively involved in taking care of their children, and they may
need more support from the health care system, according to a new study by a Northwestern University pediatrician.

There was some suggestion that mothers were
more likely to
support their daughter to be active, whereas
fathers were
more likely to
support their son's activity, though caution is
needed here given the disparity in which parents provide data, with 72 % of families having data from mothers only and 28 % from
fathers only.
Cohabiting couples tend to be younger and have less college education than married couples, and cohabiting
fathers tend to have lower incomes and are slightly less likely to be employed than married
fathers (77 % compared to 90 %).19 Consequently, cohabiting couples may
need more support to build economic stability, including job training and placement, as well as financial education to better manage less income and fewer resources.
This finding is consistent with the results of other studies, 34 and many service providers are trying to find ways to encourage
fathers to attend parenting programmes.35 Reports of difficulty sustaining behaviour change over time and the desire for further
support have also been reported previously.9, 33 Continuing
support to the group from both volunteers and professionals has been proposed as well as flexible, open access, non-structured sources of
support.37 Previous studies have also suggested that 30 — 50 % of families who take part in parenting programmes are likely to show no benefit because of other events in their lives, and may therefore
need more than a single intervention.36
New research
needs to emphasize psychosocial approaches to the prevention of depression in high risk women and to the treatment
needs of depressed mothers and their families.4, 7,11 Most studies of treatment have focused primarily on the mother's depression, relying on medication or individual psychotherapy, 12 rather than on the mother's
needs more broadly, including her relationship with her baby and the role of the
father (or other responsible adult) in providing emotional
support and practical help with child care.
Yet
fathers tend to be
more isolated and less likely to access
support services when they
need them.
