and now Jean - Marc Vallee's «Dallas Buyers Club,» which has made McConaughey a strong
favorite to land a Best Actor nomination.
Monroe is the heart
and soul of «The Guest,»
and she's essayed one of our
favorite performances of next year too, in David Robert Mitchell brilliant horror
film «It Follows.»
However through the careful writing of Ryan Coogler
and Joe Robert Cole, as well as the charismatic
performance by Winston Duke, the
film managed to make what could have been a messy character an undisputed fan
favorite.
This
film is also one of my

favorite film of the festival.
With another strong
performance by Radcliffe anchoring the
film, more of fan
favorite villain Snape (Rickman, Sweeney Todd),
and bolstering even further an already impressive cast of the finest British actors, The Half - Blood Prince provides another solid entry in the franchise, giving an entertaining bridge between the strong Order of the Phoenix
and the upcoming final chapter, The Deathly Hallows.
Crazy People is consistently watchable, primarily because of Moore's ingratiating
performance (not to mention the eclectic supporting cast, which includes legendary character actor Walsh
and an early David Paymer appearance)
and the sporadic fake ads (my
favorite: a poster for a horror
film that reads, «this movie won't just scare you, it will fuck you up for life»).
Expect the
film, with its rich
performances and almost Coenish blend of tones, to be one of the fall's critical
favorites —
and maybe a commercial one, too, if winning the Audience Award at Toronto is any indication.
Rooney Mara gave my
favorite female
performance of the year,
and she probably has the most raw screen time of any of the actresses in this category (being the absolute lead of the
film will do that for you).
The follow - up to one of the most charming family
films of the last ten years is almost equally charming, featuring the return of everyone's
favorite bear in an adventure that takes him behind bars
and includes a wonderfully villainous
performance from Hugh Grant.
Other highlights this weekend include Bushwick Basel, in which 11 mainstays of Bushwick's gallery scene will be curating their own show within Starr Space; the Buswhack series of
performance and film at the Bushwick Starr; «Sculpture Garden» at the Historic Onderdonk House, a group show of sculpture co-curated by Deborah Brown of Storefront Bushwick
and one of our
favorite local artists, whose latest series of paintings, «Freewheeling,» opens at the Active Space during the festival.
Some of our
favorite artists - who - make - splash represented in the show include Digi - Feminist Leah Schrager, storyteller
and socially conscious artist Olive Allen,
and lets not forget Lobster - Porn
performance artist Rebecca Goyette
and her collaborative
film about Trump
and his golden showers.
