In honor of International
Women's Day, I wanted to share some of my
favorite contemporary female
authors.
I always imagined my typical reader to be a
woman in her mid 40s - 60s, a high school / university graduate, in full - time employment or retired, a homeowner, on a median income, someone who liked shopping online, loved reading complex thrillers, and probably counted James Patterson, Dan Brown, James Rollins, and Clive Cussler among her
favorite authors.
, Shriver goes on to admit that she sometimes has trouble including female writers when asked to name her
favorites, in part because «The big names in the literary pantheon are repeated over and over again... [I] n the glare of a spotlight and frantic to remember any
author's name at all, even
women like me are going to remember Philip Roth — just as, asked to name a soft drink, I'm going to remember Coca - Cola.
I have done some approximation of the study Miller suggests — asking men and
women to list
favorite authors or books — and I have to say that I agree with her results.
Based on your
favorite authors and novels, I have a feeling that you love books that are about
women's lives — page - turners, but still substantive and written beautifully.
Among my
favorites are Olive Wellwood, a complicated
woman whose writing for children supports her large family (she's based on one of my
favorite childhood
authors, the writer E. Nesbit); her eldest daughter, Dorothy, whose desire to become a doctor is verbally but not always materially supported by her permissive, counter-cultural family; and Phillip, a boy with the drive and genius to become a great potter who is discovered living in the basement of the brand - new South Kensington (soon to be Victoria & Albert) Museum.
Alcott was a
favorite author of mine before I even knew how to read; my mom read Little
Women to me out loud.
Another of my
favorite authors, Julia Quinn, says «Woodiwiss made
women want to read.
Three reader
favorites also return next month: Elizabeth Strout is back with Anything Is Possible, out in late April; A Man Called Ove
author Fredrik Backman publishes Beartown late in the month; and Anita Shreve will share her tale of a
