features Gere alongside Steve Coogan, Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall in a thriller about two married couples who meet to discuss what to do about a crime apparently committed by their children; and political fable The Party, written and directed by Sally Potter, whose cast includes Scott Thomas, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer and Cillian Murphy.
Three other
films in
competition represented «promotions» for their directors, who had all had their previous outings
featured in other sections of the festival, but the results were uneven at best.

The 18th Costume Designers Guild awards, hosted by Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad, Masters of Sex) were handed out last night in
feature film, television and commercial categories and Mad Max: Fury Road, The Danish Girl and Beasts of No Nation bested their
competition in their categories.
In addition to these 11 first

competition, the New Directors section of SFIFF57 includes 14 out - of -
competition films, which will be announced at the Festival's press conference Tuesday, April 1.
Jury protocol entails some discretion about what I saw, but I can honestly say that, between the three
feature juries doing duty this year — the others being Arturo Ripstein's international
competition jury and the «Cineasti del Presente» jury under Dario Argento — most of the
films that I valued, in whatever section, were honored one way or another.
It's an impressive
feature debut for French filmmaker Xavier Legrand (an Oscar nominee in the short
film category), who duly won the Venice jury's Silver Lion for best director, and who stands a shot at winning another prize in Toronto's Platform
competition.
Annemarie Jacir, the first Palestinian woman to direct a
feature film (2008's Salt of this Sea), is in
competition with her urban road movie Wajib, while Nora Twomey's The Breadwinner, an animated
film about a girl's struggles in Afghanistan, will also compete for the title of best
film.
Kristian Levring's new
feature film The Salvation is headed to Cannes shortly in the Out of
Competition section, as part of the Midnight screenings.
Porco Rosso follows the title character, a WWI pilot cursed with porcine
features, as he agrees to participate in an aerial battle with a flashy rival, with the
film detailing the character's various exploits in the buildup to the
competition (as well as his growing friendship with a spunky mechanic).
Shults takes what on the surface is just another indie drama about family dysfunction, but he seems to have filmmaking instincts in his bones, even for his first
feature, that it is no surprise the
film received the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award in the narrative
feature competition at the 2015 SXSW
Film Festival.
