At the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in New York this May, eight of the 17 participating galleries
featured artists working with textiles, whether by incorporating them into sculpture, working directly with weaving or sewing, or referring to fabric patterns and forms.
In conjunction with the exhibition I think it's in my head, the four presenting artists are
all featured artists working with diverse media.
Highlights include three exhibitions opening at Guild Hall on October 22; a show
featuring artists working with glass at the Islip Art Museum; and this year's «Artists Choose Artists» exhibition opening at the end of the month at the Parrish Art Museum.

The roundtable

The first «fully painted»
feature film took a live - action drama of the days following Vincent van Gogh's untimely death in a small French village and,
with the
work of more than 125
artists from around the world, converted every frame into an oil painting in the Modernist's style.
The Labs are the centerpiece of the Institute's year - round
work with narrative
feature filmmakers and are part of 24 residential labs the Institute hosts each year to discover and foster the talent of emerging independent
artists in film, theatre, new media and episodic content.
It has everything from a making - of documentary (titled «John Carpenter's The Thing: Terror Takes Shape»
featuring interviews
with John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, make - up designer Rob Bottin, matte
artist Albert Whitlock, and other cast and crew members) to outtakes,
work - in - progress special effects footage and behind - the - scenes footage.
Filmed in aqueous greens and blues, its period design dripping
with kitschy nostalgia and retro - futurism, «The Shape of Water» takes its cues from Golden Age Hollywood, including musicals, Bible epics and 1950s creature
features, as well as the sleekly optimistic advertising imagery of the early 1960s: Elisa's best friend and next - door neighbor, Giles (Richard Jenkins), is a commercial
artist working on a campaign for Jell - O, the shaky symbolic repository for the time period's most uncertain hopes and anxieties.
Active technology is superior for fine
work such as capturing handwriting or making thicker lines when you press harder, as
artists do
with real pens and brushes, or offering special
features such as an «eraser» on the opposite end of the stylus.
The star - studded event (which still has tickets available) will
feature work from a variety of
artists and a host committee packed
with celebrity animal lovers, including Hilary Swank, Emmy Rossum and her half - brother Scott Eastwood.
Guest rooms are decorated
with works by Canadian
artists and
feature locally crafted furniture.
