Trevor Paglen, (b. 1974, USA) lives and works in San Francisco Paglen's
visual work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern, London; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); Massachusetts Museum of
Contemporary Art, North Adams; the 2008 Taipei Biennial; the 2009 Istanbul Biennial, and has been
featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, Wired, Newsweek, Modern Painters, Aperture, and Art Forum.
Drawn from the collection of Dr. Kurt Gitter and Alice Yelen Gitter, and guest - curated by noted Japanese - art scholar Joe Earle, the exhibition
features 82 works by 40 artists, including three historic vessels illustrating both the chronological range of the collection, and a
visual touchpoint for viewers to better understand the traditions referenced by modern and
contemporary artists.
Featuring essays and unpublished texts by critics in
contemporary and media arts, including Joan Fontcuberta, Derrick de Kerckhove, Suzanne Paquet, Fred Ritchin, and David Tomas, the publication was designed to challenge a re-examination of what photography is today, in a time when communication and transmission of
visual data in cyberspace, the boundaries of virtual reality, and the Internet as a global public space proliferate images and reflect an imaginal reshaping of the world.
The gallery will
feature carefully selected artists with a focus on
contemporary surrealism in terms of cultural significance and
visual communication.
Programs in the drill hall include the North American stage premiere of Louis Andriessen's De Materie, directed by composer Heiner Goebbels and
featuring the International
Contemporary Ensemble in a visually dramatic production incorporating music, dance, and spoken word; a new commission by
visual artist and musician Martin Creed that marks his largest installation in the U.S. to date and reimagines the Armory's drill hall and period rooms in a surprising meditation on existence; a major new work by artist Taryn Simon that explores rituals of grief and mourning; and Circle Map, a program of ambitious spatial works by composer Kaija Saariaho that
features the New York Philharmonic.
The exhibition will
feature new portraits of Diane von Furstenberg by four leading figures in Chinese
contemporary artists — conceptual artist Zhang Huan, photographer Hai Bo, painter Li Songsong, and multimedia artist Yi Zhou — resulting in a dialogue that brings the narrative of Diane's ongoing collaborations with
visual artists into the global age of the twenty - first century.
HANDS: ART CRAFT ALIVE will
feature 50 - 75
contemporary artists with
visual art and small works curated by Atim Annette Oton and Martine Bisagni that will be auctioned off with proceeds going to both organizations.
