A sugary solution is all water kefir needs to feed, and it will feed off the sugar, and produce lactic acid, (the slight tangy taste), alcohol, (the more you let it ferment the more alcohol in your soda), and carbon dioxide, (the gas bubbles).

What is your Kefir fed on during manufacture (milk / dairy, sugar water, etc)?
Kefir is easy to make at home using organic, raw, grass - fed milk, or coconut water, and will contain far more probiotics than you can get in supplement form.
I appreciated any feed back, I have experienced the health benefits of the water Kefir and would really like to be able to grow my own.
