Reason for hope: This month, Congress passed and the President signed a new
federal education act into law — one that could begin to change our current landscape of inequitably funded schools, too often focused on a low - level curriculum unsuited to our 21st - century needs.
One of the many provisions of the 2001
federal education act, known as No Child Left Behind, was a requirement that states had to issue a «report card» for every public school.
There are also looming questions about how the Trump administration's immigration policies will impact the school environment, as well as the degree of latitude states will have in implementing the new
federal education act, known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

As a member of the
Education & Workforce committee, I strongly oppose recent efforts to reduce
federal funding in these areas, and I am the author of H.R. 258, the STEM Master Teacher Corps
Act, which would award competitive grants to school districts or states to partner with colleges and universities or nonprofit organizations to establish a program which will develop, support and retain exceptional teachers in the STEM disciplines.
The original COMPETES
Act, passed in 2007, endorsed major budget increases for NSF, NIST, and research programs at the Department of Energy as well as bolstered
