The IDEA is a
federal law that
grants funds to the states to provide
special education services to children with disabilities.
Federal spending K - 12, while limited, has a long reach: $ 14.9 billion in local Title I
grants, $ 11.9 billion in
special education grants, $ 9.1 billion in Head Start for pre-K children.
On the provision of
special education services for students attending private schools, state laws may
grant rights that
federal regulations do not.
Under IDEA,
federal special education funds are distributed through three state
grant programs and several discretionary
grant programs:
Authored
grant that secured $ 15K in
federal funds for the purchase of assistive technologies for
special education students used to bolster learner engagement, understanding and subject mastery.
The
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides
Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition
education for low - income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
Examples of preschool programs included in
federal data collection include preschool programs operated or administered by an LEA; Head Start programs receiving funding from the LEA or for which the LEA is the
grant recipient; preschool
special education services, operated or funded by the LEA or mandated under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act; preschool programs and services administered or funded by the LEA through the use of Title I or similar government grants; or home - based early childhood educational services funded and administered by an LE
