More large resorts have sprung up in Puerto Morelos recently but there are still some smaller hotels and much of the town retains the relaxed
feel of a fishing village.

With stunning views
of the Sierra Madre mountains from the Pacific ocean, this area consists
of the picturesque town
of Zihuatanejo, which has the
feel of a traditional Mexican
fishing village, and Ixtapa, a modern tourist resort strip with big hotels and a marina with more than 600 slips
Luckily these dreary months are made up for by its many wonders: its wild Atlantic coast, the best
of food (all kinds
of fish and shellfish), inland oak and chestnut forests, and picturesque
villages of granite houses that make you
feel as though you are going back in time.
We would
feel some irritation in Cudillero, a lovely
fishing village swamped with tourists on an August weekend, reduced to the status
of parking lot and fridge - magnet emporium.
In the old port you can still
feel the
fishing village vibe, but this is functioning alongside the modern commercial port, and integrated into all
of this is plenty
of tourist establishments.
However if you do
feel the urge to move, you can venture out to dive the colorful reefs around the island with one
of the many Dive Schools, snorkel atop the crystal blue waters, charter a boat to
fish / explore other islands, hire a bicycle and delve into
village life.
Ponta Delgada, on the island
of São Miguel in the Azores, is the last call; this historic centre still has a
fishing village feel, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and a waterfront promenade.
Retaining its original
fishing -
village feel, Cesme is unspoilt by tourism and has resisted commercialisation, giving you a prime opportunity to enjoy the best
of Turkish culture.
Tourlos is another excellent base for couples breaks, the pretty white buildings
of the former
fishing village scattered next to the golden sands
of the bay, and a vibrant atmosphere without
feeling busy.
Private villas and a handful
of resorts dot the area, but the approach to the estate is marked by
fishing villages, roaming livestock and traditional farms, giving it an authentic rural
feel.
Port Campbell used to be a sleepy, little
fishing village but now has an almost cosmopolitan
feel — very colourful and very lively, with a parade
of various shops along the main street.
The villas have sunken down bathtubs and an array
of luxury facilities including a mini bar and private security box, also a generously spacious private garden area where you can enjoy the tropical and exotic delights
of nature arranged and maintained in the traditional Balinese fashion Amongst the activities offered at Lembongan Beach Club & Resort is snorkeling in the lagoons on the beaches, guided tours around the traditional
villages, taking a trip aboard the traditional sailing boats and possibly a
fishing trip if you
feel that way inclined.
Located right on the point at the very south east
of the Bukit means that residing here escapes the crowds and gives a very secluded
feel within a traditional
fishing village.
