the feel of a paperback book in their hands — in fact, Midnight Publishing has run into dozens of readers who've told us they wouldn't even read a book in these genres unless they had a paperback version.

But for many self - published authors, the ability to sell a
paperback book not only for the awesome
feeling of holding it in your hands, but because a lot
of people only read
paperbacks, make it a really appealing option.
We know our customers love physical
books (glossy photography
books; signed first - edition novels; letter - press editions; the sand - between - the - pages
feel of a mass market
paperback at the beach), but for many people, eReaders can be a practical addition to a literary life.
It's no less true for an author: selling a
book to someone ill - suited to your writing (or even «meh» about it) is great for that 64 cents (the royalty a
paperback pays), but not so wonderful, as the reader who
feels was ripped off is going to take it out on your reputation (because most readers have no idea how little
of that cover price goes to the author.
Just a note: I don't buy a hardcover
book for «how it looks on the shelf», but instead partially because
of durability / hardiness and how it
feels in my hands as compared to a
paperback.
So do I. I love the
feel of a nice, heavy
paperback book in my hands and the way that the paper is either smooth beneath my fingers (for thinner paper) or the way that it resists me.
So much depends on the more than just the text even when reading a physical
book — the
feel of the
book (I refuse to read trade
paperbacks, e.g.), the typeset, and most importantly my mood and place in life.
I also like the larger screen...

After waiting for what
felt like ages for the proof copy

Tip: Handle
paperback books of these different sizes to test the
feel of each.
At first I simply
felt a wave
of sympathy for those authors who found their familiar world swept away, particularly those authors who had
books that were supposed to come out this fall and were in the middle
of marketing campaigns designed around traditional trade
paperbacks and brick and mortar stores.

of the biggest challenges faced by a

We still miss the smell
of a new
paperback and while we still browse bookshops admiring the cover art and the wonderfully visceral

books, we have to admit that 90 per cent
of the time we buy it on Kindle.

feels different to have my own
book on my bookshelf instead
of just in my Kindle, and because I can do it all myself so I don't have any typesetting or cover design costs.
