Thankfully the lighter aspects of the story win out, because the grittier aspects of reality
on show — Farrell's
alcoholism and Travers» loneliness — are so filtered through coats of movie gloss as to
feel quite unreal.

alcoholism in an utterly safe way, and thus the Academy may
feel «edgy» for rewarding it.
The idea of focusing
on Lip's similarities to Frank is not without reason, but the speed of his
alcoholism was too jarring, and the underlining of the comparisons between Youens and Frank
feels rushed as well.
At the point of departure, we learn that Adam's (Cusack) just been dumped by his girlfriend; Nick's (Robinson) controlling wife (Kellee Stewart) is cheating
on him; and clinically - depressed Lou (Corddry)
feels he has nothing to live for, between his
alcoholism and erectile dysfunction.
