I have a feeling from what I read
and hear from
fellow writers that
publishers and agents try to imply that the traditionally publishing authors do not have to bear the whole responsibility for their books.

Any mention of self - publishing outside the designated forum (
and as J. Sarayada Shapiro notes below, even the description of that forum is hostile) is met with unmoderated sarcasm (violating their «respect your
fellow writer» rule), outright insults,
and unchecked bad behavior until the self -
publisher shuts up
and goes away or defends him / herself enough to warrant a ban.
These publishing partners will include
fellow writers you collaborate with; retailers you sell through;
publishers you sign with; agents you employ; assistants, editors,
and cover artists you hire.
