Rooney Mara gave my favorite
female performance of the year, and she probably has the most raw screen time of any of the actresses in this category (being the absolute lead of the film will do that for you).
And Mara is neck and neck with Saoirse Ronan for my favorite overall
female performance of the year (and overall performance at all, really), so she got the nod over Stewart.
This isn't really an actor - driven movie, however, and Williams isn't given enough to do to make it plausible for her to register as anybody's single favorite supporting -

Sally Hawkins Given that she gave one
of the most widely acclaimed

years — as the ever - sunny Poppy in Mike Leigh «s «Happy - Go - Lucky,» which won her a Golden Globe — it's a little puzzling that Sally Hawkins hasn't exploded since.
What had been touted as a weak

In a perfect world, Rooney Mara would be in the Best Actress category where she belongs, leaving this category open to be rightfully won by Kristen Stewart, who gave the best pure supporting
performance of any
female this
year.
Lesley Manville — unless they move Manville to supporting, it's hard to imagine this
performance not being seriously considered as one
of the best
of the
year, male or
female.
And in this
year, with so many incredible
female performances, there's a laundry list
of better options for Best Actress than her.
Meryl Streep stars as Katharine (Kay) Graham, the first
female publisher
of a major U.S. newspaper, and she delivers her most nuanced
performance in
years... that
of a conflicted woman coming to grips with her immense power at a time when many men believed she lacked the capacity for making such far - reaching and weighty decisions.
It's hard to find any grand takeaways from the nominations, except that SAG voters generally agree with the consensus — but in a scattered and perhaps thin
year for
female performances, they sometimes have slightly offbeat taste... or, in the case
of Watts and «St. Vincent,» very offbeat taste.
Everything that has been said about Kristin Scott Thomas» portrayal
of Juliette is true; this is quite possibly the richest, most complicated character that has been written for a mature

years, and she seizes upon it to craft the most honest and perceptive
