Sudan, one of three remaining northern white rhinos in the entire world, has been closely guarded at Kenya's Ol Pejeta Conservancy since 2009, along with two
female rhinos.

There are only three northern white
rhinos left in the world, one male and two
females.
Neither of the
females can carry a calf, so the fertilized embryos would have to be implanted in a southern white
rhino surrogate mother.
Zoologists knew little about the reproductive rhythms of
rhinos, breeding facilities rarely housed a good mix of males and
females, and disagreements over whether the Sabah
rhino was a subspecies of the Sumatran
rhino meant that there was little cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia and even between Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo.
The only attempt to harvest eggs in Sumatran
rhinos — from Cincinnati Zoo's star
female just after her death in 2009 — was unsuccessful.
They tried unsuccessfully to introduce a male southern white
rhino to the
female northern whites in an effort to at least conserve some of the northern white's genes, and last year listed Sudan on Tinder as the «most eligible bachelor» to raise funds
rhino IVF and rehabilitation.
Scientists are working on a form of IVF where egg cells would be removed from the remaining
females, fertilized with semen collected from Sudan and other northern white males, and then inserted into
female southern white
rhinos who would serve as surrogates.
Living with two (of the four remaining) white
rhino females, it is hoped that there still may be a baby
rhino at the conservancy.
