The visuals are often stunning, though sadly it's one of
the few Sonic games to suffer from framerate dips on occassion.
The voice acting for all the characters is pretty great as well, the cast from the past
few Sonic games return and reprise their roles very well and definitely show their chemistry, as shown by how the characters are interacting with each other in the cut - scenes.
There were
a few Sonic games that were «gritty» and «realistic» — those were called «Shadow the Hedgehog» and «Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)».
There were
a few Sonic games that had amazing game - play and an incredible story.
Last year was a very quiet year for us Sonic fans with
few Sonic games being made if not at all (with the exception of the short lived Sonic Runners), and SEGA skipping E3 2015.
Last

Sonic Mania, one of the purest and most enjoyable
Sonic games we've ever been given.

Sonic Time Twisted is one of the
few that stands out there as a completed
game and, more uniquely, the developers made the
game by creating their own assets and sprites — rather than taking them from official
Sonic games.
For the first time ever, thanks to the previously revealed third gameplay mechanic
Sonic Forces possesses, players will actually get to create their own personal character in a
Sonic game and wield a whole bunch of powerful unique weapons and as well as the press release I'll be sharing below, there's also a video and a
few screenshots, so make sure you're comfy, because there is a lot to get though:

i want them to have a party
game together, a racing
game together, a platformer together where bowser and dr. eggman team up and mario and
sonic team up (they discover each other's worlds because mysterious portals appear or something like that), and maybe a sports
game (or a
few) together.
The other new
Sonic games (haven't played Lost World yet — but judging by some user impressions it's a
few good levels and a
few really bad levels again) are bad IMHO.
There have been very
few games with such a cross section of players; Mario
games are the only other ones I can think of sincenot even the
Sonic games are played by such a wide cross section of ages.
I don't know anyone who is looking at picking up a wiiu but that said with the price drop
games like pikmin, Lego city, Mario 3d,
sonic lost worlds, wiiu fit etc all out the last
few months of the year the wiiu has a impressive line up for a great price they just need to do what they did with the 3ds and market the hell out of it over the next
few months.
A
few days ago during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced details that SEGA would be bringing its upcoming
Sonic the Hedgehog
games exclusively to the Wii U and 3DS.
Before I did
Sonic Mania, I set up the engine for Freedom Planet 2, and I prototyped a
few original
games, which I definitely have an interest in pursuing.
- for
Sonic's 25th anniversary last year, Iizuka received a task to deliver some sort of product - the target was «dormant fans» who used to play the SEGA Genesis, but haven't really played any
games since - Iizuka met Christian Whitehead, which lead to the creation of
Sonic Mania - there was talk of another port, but Iizuka thought fans would desire something new from the old
games - this is the first time Iizuka partnered with a team of devs spread across various countries - Iizuka said this team had a greater passion to create - this was in comparison to companies that set decisions on a pre-determined schedule (in meetings, etc)- the team had so many features they still wanted to add after the beta version was complete - since there were only a
few spots with text that needed to be localized, they could bring the
game to more places quicker - the
game has Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish support - the Studiopolis stage is included due to receiving the most requests from the
Sonic Mania development team - Iizuka actually considered reducing the amount of stages at one point in order to meet the development schedule -
Sonic Mania doesn't really have much in the way of cut content like scrapped stages - since
Sonic Mania was only distributed digitally, the team was able to continue working very close leading up to launch - this let them put in practically all ideas, and there are currently no plans for DLC - Iizuka recommended Flying Battery Zone for inclusion becaues he likes the music - he also likes when the player goes inside and outside the ship - Iizuka likes Mirage Saloon because the stage structure will be different depending on the player character chosen - Puyo Puyo gameplay was added because there was a Puyo Puyo
game released in the west for the SEGA Genesis - this
game was originally called «Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine», and the team thought it would make a fun boss battle - Iizuka didn't have plans to feature Blue Sphere in the special stages - the Blue Sphere special stages were brought over to Mania as a test, but ended up staying for the final
game - the team felt the need to continuously connect stages from various eras, which is doe with the Phantom Ruby story - for
Sonic Mania, it was decided that the technological limit would be set at SEGA CD, - this is higher than the Genesis but lower than Saturn - in creating a SEGA CD - grade special stage, they would intentionally make SEGA CD - grade polygons
Sure, the
game insists on having its unique bunch of characters speaking by taking a
few similar sounds and mashing them together into a grating mess just like the used to do back in the good old days, but Yooka and Laylee themselves are wonderfully animated, from the way Yooka covers his ears before a
sonic attack or how Laylee runs on top of Yooka while Yooka rolls.
I must admit this was a turnoff at first, but I actually found that I got used to it the more I played, and got the hang of a
few tricks as well — in all honesty, while I feel that
Sonic isn't as fast as he used to be, it's because the
game has more of a focus on maintaining speed and learning how to navigate the level without losing it.
It also gave out the release dates of more upcoming Switch
games, including Splatoon 2, Arms, Disgaea 5 Complete, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and
Sonic Forces, to name a
few.
Secondly, there are mine - cart sections where you have to jump at the right time to clear gaps, and lastly there are a
few sections that require you to «tilt» the stage in order to move water to push a plug from the wall, whilst stopping
Sonic from sinking into some spikes — this bit was pretty badly executed, and one of the worst elements of the
game, but it's easy once you know how, and only lasts a
few seconds.
It's certainly exciting when you manage to string a
few of these maneuvers together and go hurtling through space in a way that is sure to invoke fond memories in anyone that's played classic
Sonic games before.
For the last
few weeks to build up hype for both
games the official
Sonic youtube channel has uploaded pieces of music listen to them
Even through I am a
Sonic fan, I haven't played a
Sonic game in the last
few years.
It wouldn't be a
Sonic game either if it didn't have a
few loop the loops thrown in and thankfully
Sonic Dash has plenty of them.

The story is set in the era of the original
Sonic games, and will feature Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose, all characters from the first
few Sonic titles.
Meaning we don't have a full list of the

Triple Trouble is, in my opinion, the best 8 Bit
Sonic game and one of the
few that can be classified as a classic.
Sonic and Shadow serve as the high point of the
game but their levels are
few and far between.
Were this a
Sonic title from a
few years ago I'd end by renewing the call for a proper 2D
game, but Mania has already scratched that itch, and for all the sore spots, there is something about modern
Sonic's combination of ridiculous speed and cinematic impact that seems worthy of further investigation.
By no means is it a perfect
game; there are a
few bumps in the road, but it is a simple, fun nostalgia trip that
Sonic fans need to try.
That said, I guarantee quite a
few of those
games I mentioned have AAA budgets behind them (Skyrim, the sports
games, Dragon Quest,
Sonic, etc...)
Other sounds leave room to be desired: characters in the
game speak through text accompanied with grunts or basic words, and while some like Mario or
Sonic have plenty of voice clips, lesser characters, like Shadow the Hedgehog, speak using the same
few grunts (or sometimes the singular «grunt «-RRB- over and over again.
Any video
game fans who lived through the 90's will remember the golden age of the platformer genre, with titles such as
Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario and Bubsy the Bobcat being just a
few of the most notable releases.
mascots such as
Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, and Donkey Kong to name a
few have all been in media outside of their respective video
games.
Sega's good
Sonic the Hedgehog video
games over the past decade are
few and far between.
Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice was due to release on 3DS in quarter four this year and this delay marks one of the
few occasions I feel a delay can really benefit a
game.
The downside is that Classic
Sonic has the
fewest story levels in the
game.
Besides a
few minor glimpses of speed,
Sonic is a
game that really slows down the pace way too much and causes once again some major frustration.
Classic
Sonic is pure 2D goodness, while Modern
Sonic is the standard 2.5 D / 3D of the prior
few games (
Sonic Unleashed,
Sonic Colors).
