years, full
of heady ideas and indelible performances.
The highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott's 1980s sci -
fi classic is directed by Arrival and Sicario filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and takes place 30
years after the events
of the first
film.
While moviegoers have seen a lot
of Teresa Palmer over the past few
years in
films such as The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Bedtime Stories, for her upcoming sci -
fi action thriller I Am Number Four, we're going to see a new...
Though the more futuristic stuff isn't too distracting considering Hollywood's current obsession with dystopian sci -
fi films like «The Hunger Games,» the decision to cast a 24 -
year - old actor in the lead role (playing a 16 -
year - old instead
of the 12 -
year - old that appears in the book) feels wrong for a number
of reasons.
Whether this proves a breakout in the traditional manner (ie leading toward a sci -
fi / superhero franchise in a
year or two) would seem to be in some doubt, simply because Forsyth and Pollard are established visual artists for whom this
film is largely an extension and enlargement
of themes they'd made their careers anyway.
Fresh off taking a warmed - over Cloverfield «sequel» and polishing it into the marketing triumph
of this
year's Super Bowl, Netflix has scooped up another discarded sci -
fi project for its ever - growing roster
of original
films.
By far the best sci -
fi film I've seen yet this
year, and proof that international
films make for more interesting dynamics, Snowpiercer is easily the original action
film a summer full
of big budget explosions needs.
This has the potential to not only be the best Predator
film yet, but also the single best sci -
fi action flick
of the
year.
Britain fared better, with my favourite sci -
fi horror
film in a long time, Glazer's Under the Skin, and my favourite entertainment
film of the
year, the conventional, but charming Pride, while the flawed Mr. Turner impressively reflects the great painter's sun worship through Dick Pope's widescreen cinematography.Highlights
of my
year included being on the FIPRESCI jury at the Hong Kong IFF, where I admired Yang Hen's third feature, Na pian hu shui (Lake August), and a couple
of first features among others, as well as attending the amazing HK
film market for the first time, where I saw one
of my three 2014 «
films for the ages», Tsai's Journey to the West; and seeing a nitrate print
of Hitchcock's Rebecca at the George Eastman House in Rochester (where they are doing a three - day all - nitrate festival in May, 2015!).
I've lost count
of how many «versions» there now are
of his early sci -
fi masterpiece Blade Runner (1982) and, after
years of threats, that
film will have a sequel this October, Blade Runner 2049, though Scott opted to pass the directorial reigns over to Denis Villeneuve (Arrival).
Last
year Ridley Scott delivered the crowd - pleasing sci -
fi survival drama The Martian, and now he's busy shooting Alien: Covenant, the first
film in what is supposed to be a new trilogy that will lead up to the events
of the original Alien from 1979.
South Korea's Bong Joon - ho delivers a star - studded, dystopian sci -
fi thriller — one
of the best
films of the
year.
Michelle Monaghan has shown her versatility in a wide variety
of films over the
years, from comedies like «Kiss Kiss Bang Bang» and «Made
of Honor» to dramas like «Gone Baby Gone» and «North Country» to sci -
fi thrillers like «Source Code» and «Eagle Eye.»
There are a number
of elements which appear to have been influenced by sci -
fi films from the last thirty
years or so.
Other highlights from 2016 (and also must see
films) have included the very informative and poignant documentary, «Maya Angelou and Still I Rise,» by Rita Coburn Whack and Bob Hercules; Mick Jackson's «Denial,» the gripping Holocaust denial tale with compelling performances from Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall; Paul Verhoeven's «Elle,» with its great Isabelle Huppert performance; the remarkably thoughtful sci -
fi film, «Arrival,» by Denis Villeneuve; Tom Ford's «Nocturnal Animals,» with its outstanding performances from Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon; David Mackenzie's «Hell or High Water,» this summer's sleeper hit; Cristian Mungiu's «Graduation,» winner
of the Best Director prize at Cannes; and Cristi Puiu's «Sieranevada,» winner
of the top prize at this
year's Chicago International
Film Festival.
He followed that
film with one hugely disappointing sequel / rehash, 2007's «Hostel: Part II,» and in intervening
years has flirted with a host
of projects which never came to pass (the Stephen King adaptation «Cellular,» a feature - length expansion
of his «Grindhouse» short, a sci -
fi film called «Endangered Species,» etc.), stepped in front
of the camera for friends («Inglourious Basterds,» «Aftershock «-RRB- and helped bring the Netflix series «Hemlock Grove» to life.
They've also announced dates for some forthcoming
films like the sequels to Fifty Shades
of Grey, and also shifted some
films arriving over the next few
years, such as the video game adaptation Warcraft from Duncan Jones, the sci -
fi sequel Pacific Rim 2 from Guillermo del Toro and the first official movie that kicks off Universal's classic movie monsters franchise reboot, The Mummy.
Synchronicity — Sci -
fi can be a tricky bet at smaller festivals like this (especially when you hear them being compared to much larger budget and classic
films like Blade Runner), but TAD has chosen a few good ones the last couple
of years and with director Jacob Gentry's track record
of The Signal behind him, there's at least some solid talent involved.
Best known previously for Paddy Considine «s short «Dog Altogether» (the basis for «Tyrannosaur «-RRB- and Samantha Morton «s «The Unloved,» he shoots the
film with the perfect mix
of urban grit and sci -
fi sheen, with some
of the most striking lighting
of the
year.
After a six -
year hiatus, Niccol went back to original sci -
fi for In Time, a mediocre
film with echoes
of Gattaca that disappointed stateside but performed well overseas.
A lot
of noise has been made this
year over how fans
of Science Fiction should go see some
of the larger studio - produced Sci -
Fi flicks like Jupiter Ascending and Chappie if they want to see more «original» science fiction
films in theaters in the future.
