Most North Americans don't get enough
fibre in their
diet, which is an important part of good gut health.
Rabbit mixes and pellets should not be the main component of your bunny's
diet because it
does not provide the proper roughage your bunny requires for digestion, the proper
fibre for wearing their teeth down, and is fattening.
Diets without sufficient
fibre can lead to dental disease, disturbance in the gut bacteria causing «sticky bottom» (when a rabbit doesn't eat its soft faeces) and gut stasis (when the gut stops moving and the rabbit stops passing faeces and stops eating: a condition that is serious and can be fatal).
If you
do want to include lettuce into your bunny's
diet, choose the darker, more leafy and fibrous varieties like romaine lettuce, which are higher in
fibre and nutrients.
