If abstraction is favored by undiscerning speculator collectors as well as museums hoping to advance a fast - forward chronology of
art history, there is still no small amount of
figurative work on the scene.
My
work is evolving all the time and after 35 years as a
figurative artist I've recently discovered ways to express myself through abstract
art which has been the most exciting and liberating experience I've had for ages.
But that may be about to change thanks to the Royal Academy of
Arts (RA) which has launched the first major survey of Diebenkorn's
figurative and abstract
works in the UK in almost 25 years.
It features
works by abstract and
figurative painters and sculptors, as well as pioneers of installation and performance
art.
Diebenkorn speaks of his family background and early life; his education and his service in the Marine Corps; his introduction to modernism; his early abstract
work; the formation of the Bay Area
figurative school and the relationship between
art in New York and in the Bay Area; teaching; critical and public reaction to his
work; important exhibitions of his
work; vacillating between the
figurative and the abstract in his painting; his
working methods.
In 1999 he co-founded the Stuckist movement, which railed against the dominance of the Young British Artists» conceptual
art, in favour of contemporary
figurative work.

In an attempt to avoid the trappings of abstract and
figurative art, the artists made extensive use of collage and assemblage, appropriating images and incorporating real objects into the
work.
The Hall of Sculpture Balcony bears a hefty selection of Nicole Eisenman's paintings and plaster sculptures amongst the museum's
figurative marble statues, though the artist's brand of classical and
art historical absurdities seem tame in comparison to the strangeness of satirical and metaphorical
works by Iranian artist Rokni Haerizadeh installed in an adjacent space.
