How to make sense of a
show of painterly,
figurative art
in 2016 is part of the fun when taking
in On
Painting.
«The anniversary coincides with a new outpost
in Hong Kong, which will open
in January with an inaugural
show by Belgian artist Michaël Borremans, lauded for his
figurative paintings.
Although a critical force within the group, the artist's contributions to Memphis —
in the form of graphic patterns — were only a small segment of her career; as the ICA
show makes clear, Du Pasquier is a multifaceted artist, and she became particularly interested
in abstract and
figurative painting.
In line with the recent trend of
figurative painting, this
show, curated by Katrina Neumann, brings together a multigenerational group of artists who create
paintings that consider the human form within real and imagined environments.
But when it comes to viewing David Park's body of work, this book shines with superb color plates dispersed throughout,
showing Park's development as a painter from his early days, his non-
figurative period, his return to
figurative painting, and his final
figurative work
in gouache.
Alison is quite interested
in a kind of counter-history of
figurative painting, and she notoriously included Bernard Buffet
in that
show.
Sly and obliquely, but also unmistakably, another Hockney
show currently available
in London, this time at Annely Juda Fine Art, the artist's regular dealer, casts doubt on the proposition the Royal Academy exhibition of his recent portraits seems determined to put forward, which is that nothing can match a
figurative painting made when directly confronting the subject, with no technology to modify -LSB-...]
But I still had this desire to do a really strong
show on new
figurative painting, and I just adapted it to this commercial situation — a
show that's supported by making sales, which we do
in this sector.
Standout artists
in the
show include Tomashi Jackson, who uses Josef Albers's 1963 text Interaction of Color to explore the history of racial segregation
in her painterly assemblages; David Shrobe, who creates surreal portraits by combining his
figurative paintings and drawings with found materials; and Kennedy Yanko, who makes abstract sculptures by blending rubbery skins of poured
paint and crumpled paper with bits of marble and scrap metal.
But like Elmer Bischoff and David Park, with whom he made the turn to
figurative painting a few years later, Diebenkorn was asking questions that abstract expressionism couldn't always answer, even though, as the early works
in the
show at the Royal Academy (until 7 June) suggest, he was a loyal and talented disciple: the LA Times described him as «one of the most gifted artists
in the American non-objective field».
This
show, entitled Case Studies, features new
paintings by Bas, who is primarily known for his expressionistic and highly detailed
figurative paintings, but also for his works
in sculpture, film, photography and installation.
Artists from Istanbul represented
in Double Crescent are Hale Tenger, whose edgy assemblage works, addressing issues of gender and identity, have been exhibited at the biennials
in Saõ Paolo, Johannesburg and Istanbul; Ali Kazma, whose powerful videos of people at their occupations have been
shown at the Istanbul Biennial; Ayşe Erkmen, whose witty architectural interventions have been featured at Art Basel, the Hamburger Bahnhof and the Sharjah Biennial; Gülsün Karamustafa, a multimedia artist whose research - based installations on subjects such as nomads and refugees have been
shown at Documenta, the Salzburger Kunstverein and the Walker Art Center and Nazım Ünal Yılmaz whose large - scale
figurative paintings have been exhibited at the Kunsthaus Stade
in Germany and Contemporary Istanbul.

A new group
show looks at the ways
in which 17 contemporary artists are approaching the topic of gender through
painting, picking apart the idea of the binary
in ways that are
figurative, expressive and abstract.
It focuses on the radical change of direction
in the artist's career between 1930 — 1969, 50 key
paintings and sculptural reliefs

in the 1990s, British art

in terms of column inches
in histories of modern and contemporary art, but — as Ikon's new
show on the decade should demonstrate — it was a period of free - wheeling experimentation,
in which
figurative painting made a comeback, the variety of abstract styles increased, installation art grew
in ambition and cut - and - paste appropriation prevailed.

And more recently, there seems to be an explosion of
figurative painting shows and articles focusing on portraiture and intimacy
in particular.

in classically and surrealistically
figurative styles that still
showed influence of abstractionism.
Remarking on the «Women
Painting Women: Our Collective Conscience,» Demato pointed out that the
show not only reveals a snapshot of the current state of painters working
in contemporary
figurative realism today but provides insights into the different muses influencing female painters today.
Anyone can see that the early Russian
paintings in this
show are a breathtaking escape from the old conventions of
figurative painting, or that geometric art
in the hands of great Latin American pioneers such as Oiticica and Lygia Pape is an escape from the ancien regime of the west, that their ecstatic floating forms are a vision of freedom.
These, made during the years before he began his late
figurative paintings, are his next step after the
paintings in the
show.
And it does seem to be part of a new spark of interest
in the expressionist and the painterly that is emerging
in the art world of late, with several recent
shows spotlighting
painting of a decidedly
figurative and subjective bent.
In his current exhibition of abstractly
figurative paintings, Iraqi - born artist Ahmed Alsoudani has
shown that
painting a narrative is more than a literal process.
The

It's a really interesting

Using Bacon and Freud as anchors, the
show will examine the portrayal of the human experience
in art and provide an expansive picture of
figurative painting in the 20th century, particularly
in Britain.
But, and this is a big «but», I was thrown off sympathising thus by two things: firstly, that Diebenkorn changed tack just when things were getting interesting / challenging
in terms of how three - dimensional space
in his abstract
painting might be tackled anew; and secondly, that the
figurative paintings on
show here seem to offer no furtherance to, or deliverance from, those issues.»
Still, the
show does promise to help assert the continued relevance of
figurative painting in today's anything - goes, hodgepodge art world.
