What he conceives, moreover, will be a figure revealing itself to the inner eye of the soul; if he now beholds this,
the figure of the servant will confuse him when he again opens his eyes.
There is the strange
figure of the Servant in Second Isaiah whose suffering, even if it is not the suffering of God, is the way to redemption.
There is good reason to think that Jesus himself first directed the attention of his followers to
the figure of the Servant.
If however we conclude that Jesus saw his mission adumbrated in the ideal
figure of the Servant of the Lord, we encounter a certain difficulty.
The figure which takes his place is
the figure of the Servant.

of Heaven according to a conscious or unconscious Christian tendency, Buber answers that there is not one single trait
of this
figure which is not already to be found in the tradition
of the suffering
servant.
The fusion
of the two ideal
figures of Messiah and
Servant of the Lord in the historical person
of Jesus is dramatically represented in the scene which in all gospels prefaces the story
of his public career.
Even though Jesus climactically fulfills the
Servant figure [
of Isaiah 53] in his crucifixion, this does not mean that there is no longer any application
of it to anyone else.
Even if the
Servant figure is consistently or only at times conceived as an individual (on the pattern
of a Jeremiah, or perhaps the prophet himself, or a contemporary, or someone yet to appear), the very individualization is obviously shaped in the prophet's mind, consciously or unconsciously, by his people's corporate experience in the days from Nebuchadnezzar to Cyrus.

Servant, however mysterious a
figure he may be, was one whose vicarious sufferings were for the sake
of the healing
of his people.
And when Francis embraced a man who had been shunned much
of his life because
of facial tumors, CNN commented that the Pope «was living up to the ideals
of his namesake, Francis
of Assisi, a preeminent
figure who considered himself a
servant to the poor and destitute.»
One might almost, Lohmeyer suggests, venture to reconstruct the Galilean theology — or, rather, the primitive Galilean piety — from the pieces
of tradition which Mark records; though not every «Son
of Man» saying in the Gospel is primitive, and in its present form the conception has been influenced by the later identification
of the Son
of Man with the Suffering
