in the 1970s.
In «Dimensions Variable» Gortner hand sculpts each surface using wood, foam, staples, canvas and acrylic
paint before using
oil paint to realistically render the
figure.
The depicted
figures are not defined beforehand and then simply executed
in oil painting, but are gradually developed
in several layers, which are repeatedly sanded and
painted over directly on the canvas.
Lining the lower levels are academic
paintings in the newly introduced technique of western
oil painting — portraits,

In the large - scale work Hebron (1998 - 2001), Petlin utilizes chalk and
oil on unprimed linen to create outlines of

The Two Francis Bacon
paintings displayed
in this exhibition are: «Paralytic Child Walking on All Fours (from Muybridge)» 1961
oil on canvas, and «Seated
Figure» 1989
oil on canvas - which has been on loan to the Gemeentemuseum from the Estate of Francis Bacon for their dedicated Bacon room since 2008.
My favorite piece was Chrystie 31, a more challenging
oil on paper that returns to Johns and Motherwell, with a substantial corner of a blue rectangle balancing a sweeping light
figure in thin
paint, wash upon wash that takes the tone down to near the paper's white.
By concentrating on three palettes within
oil painting — the grisaille, the controlled palette and the full color palette — students will be guided to proficiency
in conveying gestural vitality, proportional order, tonal comprehension, planar cohesion, structural anatomy and color harmony
in their depictions of the human
figure and portrait from direct observation.
