Nicole Gehrke, a former Ph.D. student in the
lab, had recently managed to
fill a biological matrix with mineral to reproduce nacre, a composite, iridescent, calcium carbonate — rich
material formed in the inner shell of some mollusks and commonly known as mother of pearl.
