film exactly the kind of unofficial companionship that ties Linklater's experiments like Slacker and Waking Life.
And for anyone who has been a fan of the remarkable arthouse
films that Amazon has supported in the past few years (Manchester By the Sea, The Salesman, Chi - Raq, The Lost City of Z, Love & Friendship,
Last Flag Flying, and The Neon Demon), this is a huge bummer.
You might not know by first looking at it but
Last Flag Flying is actually a much, much, much belated sequel to the 1973 Hal Ashby
film The
Last Detail.
Linklater's next
film is
Last Flag Flying, which stars Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne and is currently pencilled for a late 2017 release date.
But for whatever reason (perhaps rights issues over Hal Ashby's 1973
film adaptation of the first book),
Last Flag Flying is a «spiritual sequel» at best, with the characters» names changed and their backstories subtly adjusted (for one, two of them are former Marines now).
The opening - night
film is Richard Linklater's
Last Flag Flying, a dramedy about aging Vietnam vets reuniting after many years to attend the funeral of one of man's son, who was killed in the Iraq war.
«
Last Flag Flying» is not a
film about camera angles or about light and shadow, although Linklater directs those aspects as befits his reputation from his «Before» series.
His characters» real - world counterparts had another unexpected effect on
Last Flag Flying: soon after teaming with Linklater to adapt the novel into a feature screenplay, he learned that Jack Nicholson would not be able to reprise his role from the original
film.

film to be incredibly one note, which is not the case in
Last Flag Flying.
While
Last Flag Flying doesn't hit its beats as hard as Linklater's best work, it is a
film that will have you experiencing every emotion under the sun.
As
Last Flag Flying eases into being a road - trip
film (a distinctly American genre I didn't realize I missed so much until I was riding sidecar), Linklater, always better at time - constrained narratives, hits his stride, the guys» camaraderie making Cranston's shenanigans almost palatable.
Last Flag Flying is not a sequel to that
film, but Linklater has described it as a companion piece.
