film Unbroken in Australia and flies direct from there to Berlin today.
And somehow the dismal Angelina Jolie
film Unbroken wound up with three nominations.

film Unbroken.

And the Academy didn't bite (here or in most categories) on seemingly Oscar - ready
films like Mr. Turner and
Unbroken.
While Tribeca Film did have a few notable releases in 2014 (especially the prison drama Starred Up, starring
Unbroken's Jack O'Connell), it released far too many mediocre - to - poor
films to consider 2014 a success.
Either
Unbroken needed to be two hours longer to to explore Louie's spiritual growth or perhaps it should have started at the point where Jolie's
film ends.
If nothing else, «
Unbroken» may set the stage for an even greater third
film for Jolie, one that marries her first project's soul with her latest movie's scope.
In addition to his star turn in
Unbroken, he can be seen in the great British
film» 71, as well as Starred Up, in which he gives the most powerful performance by a male actor in recent memory.
If I describe the superior craftsmanship of «
Unbroken» — the stunning cinematography is by the great Roger Deakins, Alexandre Desplat composed the soaring score — in a way that makes the end results seem more like a convertible than a movie, it's because the
film boasts both sheen and efficiency without always delivering an equivalent emotional impact.

Much like Universal's other prominent awards hopeful
Unbroken (which was covered in our previous installment), a trailer for Get On Up has been released, which provides us some insight on the tone of the
film and how it will portray Brown.
For one thing, the recent track record of these late summer dramas is decidedly mixed - while The Help indeed connected with Oscar, Lee Daniels» The Butler's summer box office went unrecognized by the Academy, and it is the latter
film that Get On Up seems to resemble more, what with it being a biopic that attempts to tell the entire life story of its subject, which, as discussed in the previous installment in regards to
Unbroken, is a questionable proposition with today's Academy.
Female - led high - budget flicks like «Divergent,» «The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1» and «Maleficent» did very well at the box office, while directors Angelina Jolie and Ava DuVernay «s

Unbroken» and «Selma,» respectively, are accumulating Oscar buzz as awards season is already in full swing.

Unfortunately for Get On Up, Universal may see
Unbroken as that top contender, as they have demonstrated by giving that
film a Christmas Day release, traditionally considered the premier launching pad for an awards run.

It would be a compliment to call
Unbroken a very «Spielbergian»
film - and in many ways that is how it plays.
Given the nature of
Unbroken's subject matter, there are surprisingly few political or social references; in fact, the
film seems intentionally apolitical.
The payoff for his method comes in scenes like the
film's two very long and
unbroken takes, when he calls on his actors to use the disciplines of the stage as well as the screen.
The Michael Keaton
film is constantly in motion, with long
unbroken takes, but some of its strongest moments come from Edward Norton and Emma Stone's intense conversations, held on the roof of the theater.
Still,
Unbroken grows in stature with every hardship, just as its pivotal performer O'Connell thrives under each fresh cruelty, and the
film is hugely eventful and sometimes exciting — with battling planes giving way to sharks, storms and beatings.
The
film, based on the nonfiction book
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand, showcases the parts of Zamperini's life that took place both immediately before and during WWII — with a bit of childhood flashbacks thrown in for story purposes as well.

Unbroken feels a bit too calculated in terms of hitting all those year - end award benchmarks, but it lacks the heart and emotional connection to truly be a can't miss

Awards Speculation: It's no doubt crossed people's minds that if Angelina Jolie were to win Best Director and Best Picture for
Unbroken, she'd be the second female ever to do so... and once again with a war
film.
Angelina Jolie Pitt's third directorial project breaks away from the prestige of her last
film,
Unbroken, but the vanity project she offers is glossy, artificial and incoherent.
Finally, there's also the possibility that the
film may also feel too perfectly calibrated for Oscar and could meet the same fate as other biopics like J. Edgar and last year's
Unbroken.

unbroken take, the great Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, Children Of Men) masking cuts under cover of backstage darkness.
And again, I am the sole support for Jack O'Connell, which is predicated on my belief that
Unbroken is the
film to beat and that O'Connell's role and performance will be indisputable as a result.
