While the core story of two US Marshals in 1954 investigating the seemingly impossible disappearance of an escapee
from an island based prison for the criminally insane is compelling, the
film's ultimate
achievement is its manipulation of perception on a filmic level.
In almost any other version of this
film (including any that would come
